An alternative to installed separation software
Classic separation software means an install on one machine, a yearly licence and Windows. Separation Studio NXT, the best known of them, lists at 229 dollars a year. That is a fair price for a shop separating every day, and an odd one for everybody else.
Where the difference is
- What you pay for. A yearly licence against a price per export. Twenty exports cost under fifteen dollars and do not expire.
- Installing. A browser tab against an installer. No Windows-only build, no licence tied to a seat, no updates to keep up with.
- Where it runs. On your own computer. The artwork is not uploaded to a server, which for a client’s work under an agreement is often what decides it.
- When you pay. After seeing the result on your own artwork, rather than before.
Who that trade suits
If you separate two or three jobs a month, a yearly licence pays back badly: you are buying access rather than work. Paying per export comes out several times cheaper and drops straight into the quote for a particular order.
If you are a designer rather than a printer it is simpler still. You need to hand a finished set to a shop, not keep a professional tool for a year. Checking the artwork and counting the inks is free here anyway.
If you run a shop with a daily flow and a workflow already built around your RIP, installed software may suit you better. We will say so plainly: where separations happen several times a day, a yearly licence stops being expensive.
What comes out at the end
One archive: a film per plate, a combined layered PDF, a PSD for finishing by hand, a preview for the customer, an ink map, and a written report with print order, angles and line count.
The report is not a formality. It is the part that lets a set go to the shop without anybody ringing back to ask which plate prints first.
What is not here
Printing straight through a RIP. Files are saved, and your RIP sends them to the imagesetter the way it sends anything else.
A vector editor. This prepares artwork for print; it does not replace Illustrator.
All of it can be checked with no account: open the artwork, separate it, look at the halftone and the ink coverage. Only the export is paid.
FAQ
Can I switch if I already pay for a licence?
+
Yes, and nothing has to be cancelled first. Paying per export needs no subscription, so you can run one job here and compare it against your usual process.
Does it work on a Mac?
+
Yes. It is a browser, so the operating system does not come into it.
How many inks are supported?
+
Up to 32, the underbase among them. The practical limit is usually different: how many screens you are willing to hold in registration.
